The Axencia Galega de Innovación approves the Circular Excellence CETIM infrastructure project

The Axencia Galega de Innovación has approved the financing of the Circular Excellence CETIM infrastructure project (IN607E 2024/02) within the framework of the aid line to support the creation and improvement of research and testing and experimentation infrastructures of Galician technological centres. Thanks to this investment, at CETIM we will improve our scientific and research excellence, strengthening ourselves by renewing our research infrastructures specialised in circular economy.

The project is funded by the Axencia Galega de Innovación and co-financed by the European Union through the Feder Galicia 2021-2027 programme, with this operation being part of Policy Objective OP1, Priority 1.A, Specific Objective RSO 1.1 and Line of Action L.A 1.1.01

Circular Excellence CETIM will focus on 6 Strategic Lines of Research in Circular Economy seeking an increase in regional, national and european positioning and leadership; an increase in competitiveness and own research capacities in collaboration with companies and especially with SMEs; as well as an increase in the capacity to attract and retain R&D personnel talent to our region.

  1. Strategic Line of Research on Batteries

We will strengthen our excellence in battery research by improving scientific equipment for R&D in the development and physico-chemical characterisation of raw materials, advanced materials, electrochemical recipes (inks/slurries for electrodes, separators and electrolytes) and electrochemical cell components (anode, cathode, separator and electrolyte), and for the electrochemical characterisation of cells.

  1. Strategic Line of Water Research

We will increase research capacity in the strategic priorities at European and national level in this area – water quality to ensure water reclamation, reclamation technologies for reuse (membrane distillation) and detection and characterisation of microplastics.

  1. Strategic Line of Research in Green Hydrogen

We will increase our scientific excellence in the production of green hydrogen by means of biological processes such as dark fermentation through circular economy models, valorising waste and by-products to obtain this priority energy vector, directing the current energy model towards an efficient and sustainable system.

  1. Strategic Line of Research in Sustainable Polymers

We will enhance capacity in sustainable polymer R&D and innovation by increasing the qualitative characterisation capabilities of biopolymeric materials and recycled polymers in an integrated and comprehensive manner in order to strengthen research in this crucial area for circularity.

  1. Strategic Line of Research in Construction Materials

We will increase cutting-edge and specialised research into sustainable construction solutions for building and renovation, through R&D in sustainable construction materials and by providing differential equipment for the development of this type of innovative solutions.

  1. Strategic Line of Research in Sustainable Industry 5.0

We will specialise in the R&D of Sustainable Industry 5.0 to strengthen Artificial Intelligence-Green Algorithms, their collaboration with people and sustainability, as well as in the improvement of photonics and artificial vision as complementary, transversal and driving digital technologies for the circular economy.

Finally, it should be noted that the investment in the Circular Excellence CETIM infrastructure will strengthen CETIM’s capacity as a Technological Centre in the priority areas of the Smart Specialisation Strategy of Galicia 2021-2027 RIS3 in a transversal manner, responding to its challenges and priorities.
