Computer Vision, Digital Twins and sensors to prevent occupational hazards and reduce accident rates on construction sites

In 0ACCIDNTES, we have contributed to the development of a system capable of detecting workers, locating their position in real time, measuring physical effort and monitoring parameters related to their physical activity.

Technologies developed at CETIM for 0ACCIDNTES.

The incidence rate of fatal accidents in construction in Spain reached 11.3 deaths per 100,000 workers, 18% higher than the previous year, according to the Work Accident Statistics 2025, compiled by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy. These figures show that, despite advances in occupational risk prevention, construction still needs innovative solutions that make it possible to anticipate hazards and strengthen safety on sites.

To address this challenge, at CETIM we have applied Computer Vision technologies and sensors integrated into Personal Protective Equipment with the aim of preventing injuries and improving worker protection. As part of 0ACCIDNTES, we have thus developed a system capable of detecting workers, locating their position in real time, measuring physical effort and monitoring parameters related to their physical activity.

Likewise, we have collaborated on the integration and enrichment of the digital twin of the work environment, adding information that makes it possible to represent and interpret site conditions spatially. This digital view of the environment, combined with Artificial Intelligence models trained on both public databases and data generated during the project itself, makes it possible to identify risk patterns and move towards the early detection of potentially hazardous situations.

0ACCIDNTES: Collaborative innovation to improve safety in construction

0ACCIDNTES, an initiative led by FCC Construcción and scientifically coordinated by CETIM and ITA, has driven the application of Industry 4.0 technologies to occupational risk prevention and the reduction of accident rates on construction sites. The project also involved the companies Becsa, Fractalia, Metálicas Plásticas Jar, Alisys, IDP, LISData and Signe, and the collaboration of the AIMPLAS Technological Centre.

After four years of collecting, interpreting, digitalising and intelligently and automatically managing the information generated in different construction environments, 0ACCIDNTES has demonstrated the potential of digital technologies to move towards more predictive prevention. The integration of real-time data, digital twins and Artificial Intelligence makes it possible to identify potential risk situations before an accident occurs, facilitating decision-making and helping to reduce occupational accident rates.

To be able to assess how the solutions developed perform, the prototypes have been validated through successive test campaigns in controlled construction-site environments, following an iterative approach with three levels of testing: initial, intermediate and final. The intermediate tests were carried out at a 74-dwelling building in Tres Cantos and at a central plant yard, both belonging to FCCCO, a key step towards the final validations, which took place at a building site in Alicante and an underground infrastructure project in Tenerife.

Validation under real conditions is a fundamental step in bringing these digital technologies closer to practical application in occupational risk prevention, especially in complex environments such as work at height and underground linear works, where early detection of dangerous situations is particularly important.

The significance of this commitment to innovation was recognised in 2023 by the Plataforma Tecnológica Española de Construcción with the Best National Innovation Project Award 2023, consolidating CETIM as a leader in the application of 4.0 technologies in the construction sector.
