CETIM contributes to the Galician Material Library with new innovative materials obtained in circular economy projects

Galician Material Library, Materioteca de Galicia, promoted by the Galician Innovation Agency, is the first digital database of innovative materials created by Galician companies and knowledge centres.

Polymers included by CETIM Technological Centre are obtained or reinforced with lignin from the valorization of paper pulp manufacturing waste streams.

Culleredo, October 9th, 2020.-

Galician Regional Goverment has just published the first digital database of innovative materials created by Galician companies and knowledge centres, among which is CETIM Technological Centre.

On the new website of the Materioteca de Galicia you can consult the technical files of all materials incorporated throughout the year and a half of history of this service, promoted within the framework of the Design Program for Innovation through the Galician Innovation Agency (Gain).

Ecomaterials for the future of innovation
Specifically, the new materials provided by CETIM Technological Centre are new polymers obtained or reinforced with lignin from the valorization of waste streams from paper pulp manufacturing. In other words, they are innovative materials obtained in the framework of projects linked to the development of circular economy in Galicia.

LIGNIN-REINFORCED THERMOPLASTIC

Thermoplastic polymeric material reinforced with lignin from the revaluation of waste sources from the manufacture of paper pulp. The use of lignin, in addition to improving the properties of the polymer, means a reduction of up to 25% of the polymeric material used from other non-renewable sources. It allows the manufacture of parts by means of injection processes or 3D printing and offers possibilities of customization of color and finish.

POLYURETHANE BIOFOAM

Polyurethane biofoam obtained from the use of lignin as a substitute for polyol. The modified lignin comes from a natural and residual source, the residual black liquor from the cellulose pulp manufacturing process, while the conventionally used polyol comes from petroleum. Available in both flexible and rigid formats, it meets all the requirements for stability, kinetics and mechanical and physical properties for its application in the automotive sector, these being very similar to those of foams obtained from synthetic polyol (white colour).

The Materioteca de Galicia was created in 2019 as a space for the dissemination of innovative materials that combines an exhibition and archive of classified samples (located at the CIS Tecnología y Diseño de Ferrol) with specialized services to facilitate the transfer of materials technologies to the business and stimulate intersectoral innovation.

The new web platform allows free access to its digital repository of samples for design professionals, engineers, architects, technologists and other profiles involved in the development of innovative solutions for business challenges, as well as students of these specialties.

In addition, it can find information on all dissemination services and promotion of knowledge transfer in innovative materials.
