LIFE GREEN SEWER wastewater treatment plant validation has started

LIFE GREEN SEWER (LIFE17 ENV/ES/000341) is a technology demonstration European project. The system developed in the project, allows wastewater treatment, obtaining biogas to produce energy, which reduces the energy consumption of the process, a reuse water stream and another stream rich in nutrients. In addition, this innovative solution contributes to the reduction of sludge, improves air quality by reducing the emission of air pollutants, and reduces the cost of treatment by 30% while cutting down the microbial content along with emerging pollutants.

In recent months, CETIM has collaborated with the other partners in the manufacture and development of the pilot plant, which has been installed last January within the Ferrol water treatment plant for its commissioning and validation tests.

LIFE GREEN SEWER system is divided into two sub-stations -diagram 1-.

The FO-RO sub-station consists of the Forward Osmosis (FO) membrane unit which is coupled with the Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane. This sub-station allows obtaining reuse water and is coupled with the AnMBR (Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor) sub-station. The FO-RO sub-station was set up at CETIM’s facilities.

The AnMBR substation allows the production of biogas to reduce the energy cost of the process, also resulting in the production of a nutrient-rich stream. This substation was set up at the University of Barcelona.

The integrated pilot plant has the control and monitoring system implemented by MAGTEL.

The plant has been moved and assembled with the collaboration of SOCAMEX and EMAFESA who obtained the pertinent permits for its validation.
