Expanding capabilities: electrochemistry and bioprocessing laboratories

The commissioning of new equipment represents an important advance in the specialization of our knowledge and expansion of our capabilities.

We set up an electrochemistry laboratory, specialized in materials for Li-ion batteries, advanced materials for energy storage, and electrochemical technologies for metal recovery.

Within the Bioprocesses laboratory, we expanded our capabilities by equipping ourselves with bioreactors ranging from laboratory scale to pre-industrial scale.

CETIM have state-of-the-art scientific-technological equipment specialized in our different lines of research. In order to position CETIM as an international reference center, we strengthen our capacities with new scientific-technical equipment, also increasing our knowledge and competitiveness.

We expand our capabilities in a firm commitment to the ecological transition.

Aligned with the new Circular and Sustainable Economy models, CETIM are experts in solutions for sustainability and circular economy. Thus, in our commitment to promote this ecological transition, we are expanding our capabilities and infrastructures.

Given the boom in electromobility and electric vehicles, CETIM are committed to offering support to industries and institutions by launching a line of applied research in advanced materials for energy storage. To carry out these researchs, we have inaugurated our electrochemistry and battery laboratory with the capacity to develop environmental and energy studies.

At the environmental level, CETIM have the necessary electrochemical technologies for the remediation of contaminated aqueous effluents. We are specialized in technologies and processes that allow both the treatment and the recovery, in a selective way, of resources with high added value (metals). This allows us to carry out remediation and waste recovery processes.

At the energy level, thanks to state-of-the-art equipment, we work on advanced materials for the development of different battery cell components: composites and coatings for anode and cathode, additives for electrolytes, or solid/semi-solid electrolytes and/or separators for high energy density electrochemical cells. The laboratory has specific equipment for the assembly of Li-ion battery cells and half-cells, as well as their electrochemical characterization. Additionally, we have robotic equipment for the automation of the production and assembly processes.

Currently, CETIM collaborate with important tractor industries, developing advanced and bio-based materials for the development of the different components of the battery cells and for hydrogen storage.

On the other hand, following the principles of Circular and Sustainable Economy and aligned with our philosophy of supporting our industrial environment in the study and development of new methods and processes for the reduction of environmental impact, waste valorization and the improvement of water and air treatment, we have chemistry, bioprocesses and microbiology laboratories. In them we design sustainable processes with high added value, obtaining and recovering resources thanks to biocatalyzed processes with bacteria, fungi, enzymes or microalgae.

Recently, we have expanded our laboratories and capacities with the provision of new bioreactors -of different capacities- to carry out, at first, laboratory-scale research and, later, to scale up to pilot plants thanks to 120L pre-pilot reactors. Thus, in the Bioreactors laboratory we have 15 reactors and fermenters for the development of our work in recovery of valuable metals and critical raw materials from different types of waste such as mining, electrical and electronic, catalysts, biodegradation of plastics, extraction of proteins and fatty acids from by-products of the agri-food industry, biomass pretreatment, or obtaining biopolymers from wastewater, among others.

Thus, within our strategic development areas, CETIM strengthens and increases our lines of research and technology at the service of the industry.
