La biosolución LIFE REFOREST alcanza hasta el 80% de eficacia para reducir la erosión de suelos quemados por incendios

As it is a prefabricated system, it can be implemented more quickly than conventional systems.

Based on the three pilots installed in southern Galicia and central Portugal, a complete transferability and replicability plan has been developed for other European areas.

These conclusions were presented today during the European conference on forestry strategy organised by CETIM to close four years of R&D&I research applied in the framework of LIFE REFOREST.

CETIM is valorising successfully wine wastes, especially pomace wastes, by means of their biotransformation into bioplastics, specifically, the so-called polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs).

These degradable biopolymers are being obtained through the application of microorganisms that convert the organic matter of the waste into volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in a first stage and PHAs accumulating bacteria in the following two stages of enrichment and accumulation.

LIFE GREEN SEWER (LIFE17 ENV/ES/000341) is a technology demonstration European project. The system developed in the project, allows wastewater treatment, obtaining biogas to produce energy, which reduces the energy consumption of the process, a reuse water stream and another stream rich in nutrients. In addition, this innovative solution contributes to the reduction of sludge, improves air quality by reducing the emission of air pollutants, and reduces the cost of treatment by 30% while cutting down the microbial content along with emerging pollutants.

Led by TÉCNICAS REUNIDAS and with CETIM as scientific coordinator, ECLIPSE will research new technological routes for the revaluation of complex polymeric waste (plastics) to bring to market secondary raw materials with high added value obtained from waste.

Recycled polymers from end-of-life vehicles will first be tested in the manufacture of different automotive components, such as seats, with up to 25% of recovered material in each part.

The massive implementation of these new technologies in place of incineration or landfill would reduce 75% of the current carbon footprint, some 3 million tons of CO2.

The ECLIPSE consortium is made up of seven other driving companies which cover the whole recycling value chain: ACTECO, PICVISA, REPSOL, CELLMAT TECHNOLOGIES, GRUPO COPO, SYNTHESIA and SEAT.

ECLIPSE has a budget of more than 7M€ and has been subsidized by the Center for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) within the competitive call MISIONES 2021.

The project, called ECLIPSE and clearly aligned with the objectives of circular economy, will contribute to make possible the use of secondary raw materials from the recycling of complex polymeric waste, thus reducing the use of natural resources and the pollution generated by waste.

The consortium that will carry out the research is also made up of seven other companies covering the entire plastics recycling value chain (ACTECO, PICVISA, REPSOL, CELLMAT TECHNOLOGIES, GRUPO COPO, SYNTHESIA and SEAT) and the coordination of the project office will be carried out by CETIM Technological Centre.

The Science and Innovation Missions program, for which the Center for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) is responsible, is part of the State R&D&I Plan approved in 2021 and aims to promote projects led by companies that develop relevant research to find solutions to the main cross-cutting and strategic challenges of Spanish society.

A total of 111 projects were submitted to this second call for proposals, of which 37 were approved. The project led by Técnicas Reunidas was the third best evaluated project.

The Emulcell project “Cold bituminous mixes additivated with nanocellulose” (biopaving alternative to conventional asphalt) led by the Ourense company Misturas, S.A. and in which the Roads, Geotechnics and Materials Group of the CITEEC of the UDC and the Advanced Materials Area of CETIM Technology Centre participated, has won in the Company & Research category of the 1st Innovative Materials Competition of Galicia. The event, promoted and organised by the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN), coincided with World Materials Day.
